Education

Hello! My name is Richard J. and I can tutor in math and physics. I have an Associate of Science in Engineering from Tacoma Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Applied Physics from Pacific Lutheran University and a Master of Arts in Teaching Physics from Western Governor's University, and a license to teach in Washington State. . The subjects I can tutor include: Physics: Introductory, Electromagnetic Theory, Astrophysics, Mathematical Physics I and II, Quantum Mechanics, and Engineering Materials Science. Math: Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, and Trigonometry. In working with a student, my focus is two-fold: helping him/her master the information and assisting the student in connecting the information in a meaningful way to her/his life. I believe that each student is a unique individual with a unique perspective on life. There are as many ways to learn as there are students. It is the tutor's job to present the material in a way that the student can understand and to which the student can relate. Teaching and learning are most effective when the student, the parents, and the tutor work together. Results are rarely immediate, but with patience, persistence, and flexibility any child can learn any subject. My goal is to impart the student with the thrill of accomplishment that comes from succeeding in a task. I have a several part strategy to accomplish this. First, if possible, I connect what the student needs to learn to something the student already knows. The student and/or parents can play a big part in this by giving information on the learner’s learning style, likes and dislikes, passions, strengths and weaknesses related to learning. This help make the subject as comfortable as possible. Second, I try to make the content more meaningful by giving real world examples that use the subject being taught. Third, if possible, I use visuals to increase comprehension of the topic. Fourth, if possible, I incorporate technology to stimulate greater interest in the subject. To ensure the optimum learning environment, we can set up tutoring sessions at the local library or in your home with adult supervision if under 18. Day, weekend and evening hours are available to meet your scheduling needs. If something comes up and the tutoring session needs to be cancelled, please provide 24 hours notice. My goal is to ensure the best learning experience for the student. I look forward to talking with you about how I can assist in meeting your educational goals.
