I have a Bachelor's Degree in linguistics from Reed College. My philosophy as a tutor centers around the idea that a tutor needs to have a really firm grasp of the subject material in order to explain ideas that are often complex. But it is also just as important for a tutor to have the ability to keep students engaged with the subject material and provide them with all the tools they need to find success by themselves. This requires teaching the material to students, but also teaching them about study skills and strategies that will help them well after our tutoring sessions. Additionally, it is imperative to figure out each student's strengths and weaknesses in order to develop a strategy that works best for each particular student. I have experience tutoring at the college, high school, and middle school levels. I am able to tutor students in a variety of different subjects, including English, math, German, pre-algebra, English grammar and syntax, literature, comparative literature, ESL, geometry, and algebra. I can also assist students with preparing for tests, such as the GRE and SAT. Outside of school, I enjoy playing badminton and squash, reading, working on cars, gardening, and baking.
